Makepung Bali is a traditional buffalo racing culture from Jembrana, in the far west of the Indonesian island. Born in the rice fields, Makepung has evolved from an agricultural tradition into an important part of Jembrana’s cultural identity.
During the racing season, hundreds of buffaloes compete in pairs, pulling small traditional carts driven by jockeys at high speed. Two historic teams, Blok Barat and Blok Timur, represent the western and eastern sides of Jembrana.
Behind the races lies a story of agriculture, family, competition and prestige. Makepung also raises questions about animal welfare and the evolution of traditional practices involving animals.
This short documentary takes you inside the Makepung tradition, from the preparation of the buffaloes to the races themselves, while looking at its history and place in Jembrana today.
