Founded in 2020, this family-run business led by Beata and Marek continues the legacy of the Icelandic wool industry with a modern twist, emphasizing sustainability and local culture.
A legacy of craftsmanship
The roots of Katla Wool Studio trace back to the first knitting factory established in Vík in 1971. This legendary factory, Prjónastofan Katla, laid the foundation for the region’s reputation for wool products. When the factory ceased operations in 2019, Beata and Marek saw an opportunity to revive and modernize this heritage. They opened Katla Wool Studio to continue producing high-quality wool products using local Icelandic wool.
The uniqueness of Icelandic wool
Icelandic wool is renowned for its durability, breathability, and natural insulating properties. This wool comes from sheep that have adapted over more than a thousand years to Iceland’s harsh climate. The dual-layered fleece of Icelandic sheep combines a soft inner layer and a weather-resistant outer layer, making it ideal for creating warm, water-resistant garments.
At Katla Wool Studio, the wool undergoes minimal processing to preserve its natural qualities. The studio produces a range of products, including blankets, hats, mittens, and shawls, all made from 100% pure Icelandic wool. These items are not only functional but also reflect Iceland’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

Commitment to sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of Katla Wool Studio’s operations. The studio is committed to eco-friendly practices, such as minimizing waste during production and ensuring their products are durable. This commitment is reflected in their adherence to the principles of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark, emphasizing sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
The studio’s designs are inspired by the local landscape, folklore, and historical patterns, integrating these elements into modern, stylish pieces. Each item proudly bears the “Made in Iceland” label, a testament to its authenticity and quality.
A local family business
Katla Wool Studio is proud to be a family-run business. Beata and Marek, along with their children and beloved sheepdog Rella, manage daily operations. Rella often visits the studio, adding a touch of warmth and cheer to the working environment. This family atmosphere is reflected in their business approach, focusing on community, tradition, and a personal touch.
