The rest disperses, transforms, or accumulates in places that are often difficult to access. This reality raises an important question: what actually happens to plastic once it reaches the sea? To understand its journey, we must first look at its origins. Long before drifting between continents or breaking down into microplastics, plastic is an industrial product designed to last. This durability, which contributed greatly to its success, has also become one of the major environmental challenges of the 21st century.

How Is Plastic Made?
Most plastics used today are derived from petroleum or natural gas. After extraction, these resources are transported to refineries, where they are transformed into chemical compounds. Among the most important are ethylene and propylene. These molecules are then used to produce polymers, long molecular chains that form the basis of modern plastics. Depending on their structure, they can be used to create a wide range of materials, including packaging, bottles, textiles, and medical equipment. Lightweight, durable, and inexpensive, plastic quickly became a staple of modern life. However, this durability comes at a cost. Unlike organic materials, plastic is extremely difficult to break down naturally. A plastic bottle used for only a few minutes may remain in the environment for centuries.
From Cities to Oceans: An Often Invisible Journey
Contrary to popular belief, plastic found in the ocean does not come solely from beaches or maritime activities. Much of it begins its journey inland. Waste discarded in streets, open dumps, or industrial areas can be carried away by wind or heavy rainfall. Rivers then transport this debris toward estuaries and eventually the sea. In many tropical regions, this process intensifies during the rainy season. Waterways become major pathways for plastic pollution. Once in the ocean, waste is carried by marine currents that can transport it across thousands of kilometers. Some bottles and packaging materials even cross entire countries before washing up on a distant coastline.

Why Doesn’t Plastic Disappear in the Ocean?
Many natural materials decompose through the action of bacteria, fungi, and other living organisms. Plastic, however, resists most of these biological processes. As a result, it does not truly disappear in the ocean. Instead, exposure to sunlight, waves, and salt gradually breaks it into smaller and smaller fragments. This process can take decades or even centuries, depending on the type of plastic involved. A plastic bottle may require several hundred years to fully degrade. During that time, it continues to exist as countless smaller fragments. Therefore, even when plastic becomes invisible to the naked eye, it remains present in the marine environment.
Microplastics: A Global Pollution Problem
When plastic fragments measure less than five millimeters, scientists refer to them as microplastics. These particles are now found in nearly every ocean on Earth. Researchers have detected them in surface waters, coral reefs, polar regions, and even some of the deepest ocean trenches. Because of their small size, microplastics are easily ingested by plankton, fish, sea turtles, and seabirds. They can then move progressively through the food chain. Scientists are still studying the long term consequences of this contamination. Nevertheless, their widespread presence demonstrates how deeply plastic pollution has become embedded in marine ecosystems.

A Large Portion of Plastic Ends Up on the Ocean Floor
For many years, scientists wondered what happened to much of the plastic entering the oceans. The amount observed at the surface appeared far lower than the quantities released each year. Recent research has provided part of the answer. A significant share of this pollution eventually sinks to the seabed. Plastic particles may combine with organic matter or sediments before slowly descending through the water column. They accumulate in submarine canyons, mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and deep sea plains. These environments gradually become hidden reservoirs of pollution. Some may retain plastic waste for hundreds of years.
Reducing Waste Remains the Most Effective Solution
In response to this challenge, many initiatives focus on removing waste before it reaches the ocean. These efforts are important, but they cannot recover the microplastics that have already dispersed throughout marine ecosystems. Once fragmented, plastic becomes extremely difficult to remove. This is why scientists consider prevention the most effective strategy. Reducing waste production, improving waste collection systems, and encouraging reuse can significantly limit the flow of new plastics into the environment. The challenge is immense. Yet understanding the journey of plastic, from its manufacture to the depths of the ocean, is an essential step toward protecting the marine ecosystems upon which much of the world’s biodiversity depends.
