Two-toed sloths belong to the genus Choloepus, while three-toed sloths belong to the genus Bradypus. The well-known three-toed sloth (Bradypus tridactylus) is found mainly in northern South America. Its range extends from Venezuela to Suriname, including French Guiana, Guyana, and the northern Amazon Basin. Depending on the region, it is known by different names. In French Guiana, locals often call it aï, a name inspired by the animal’s distinctive call.
Although they look remarkably similar, two-toed and three-toed sloths followed separate evolutionary paths. They do not descend from a recent common ancestor. Instead, their resemblance results from convergent evolution, with both groups independently developing similar adaptations for life in the forest canopy.

Births remain widely spaced to maximize the young animal’s chances of survival. Immediately after birth, the infant clings to its mother’s belly before gradually moving onto her back. During the following months, it learns which leaves to eat and how to navigate the forest canopy.
Once independent, adult sloths live largely solitary lives. Encounters generally occur only during the breeding season. Communication relies mainly on quiet vocalizations and scent markings. In the wild, sloths can live between twenty and thirty years, depending on the species. Individuals in captivity sometimes live even longer thanks to veterinary care and the absence of predators.

Climate change adds further pressure. Increasing droughts threaten the tropical forests on which sloths depend for food, shelter, and movement. Fortunately, conservation programs across Latin America now protect important habitats while wildlife rescue centers rehabilitate injured sloths before releasing them back into the wild.
