In Java, peanuts occupy a modest place compared to rice or maize. Yet this legume feeds millions of people and provides income for countless farming families. Grown on small family farms, peanut cultivation requires demanding manual labor from planting to harvest. Thanks to its nutritional value and wide range of uses, it plays an essential role in food production, livestock farming, and the local economy. Behind every handful of peanuts lies a family-based agricultural system facing climate uncertainty, declining yields, and increasing competition from imported products.

Why Are Peanuts So Important in Java?
The peanut (Arachis hypogaea) belongs to the legume family. Unlike most cultivated plants, its fruits develop underground. After pollination, the flower produces a stem known as a peg (or gynophore), which grows downward into the soil where the pods mature. Indonesia produces between 1.2 and 1.4 million tonnes of peanuts each year, depending on weather conditions. Java accounts for more than 60% of the country’s production, thanks to its fertile farmland and dense agricultural landscape. The main producing regions are East Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta.
Most farms remain small, with the majority covering less than one hectare. Peanut farming is largely family-based, often involving several generations during planting and harvest seasons. Peanuts also provide important agronomic benefits. Like other legumes, they naturally fix atmospheric nitrogen through bacteria living on their roots. As a result, they enrich the soil and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers in subsequent crops. This explains why many farmers rotate peanuts with rice and maize.
A Crop That Still Depends on Manual Labor
Despite agricultural progress, peanut cultivation remains largely non-mechanized across much of Java. Planting usually begins at the start of the dry season. Farmers place each seed by hand into carefully prepared soil. Several weeks later, repeated weeding becomes necessary to reduce competition from unwanted plants.
Harvesting, however, is the most physically demanding stage. The plants must be pulled out manually before the pods detach underground. Farmers often spend several hours crouching under temperatures that frequently exceed 32°C (90°F). After harvest, the pods are separated from the roots, cleaned, and left to dry in the sun for several days. Drying reduces moisture and helps prevent mold development. Finally, the peanuts are stored in well-ventilated buildings before being sold. Depending on the region, a single harvest day may require 8 to 10 hours of labor for one family.

A Staple Ingredient in Javanese Cuisine
Peanuts are deeply rooted in Indonesian cuisine. Perhaps the most famous product is satay sauce, made from roasted peanuts, palm sugar, chili, garlic, and spices. It accompanies the iconic grilled meat skewers found throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Peanuts are also the key ingredient in gado-gado, a traditional salad made with vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and eggs, all covered with a rich peanut sauce.
They are also used in many local specialties, including:
- roasted peanuts
- boiled peanuts
- traditional biscuits
- confectionery
- cooking oil
- high-protein flour
In addition, the press cake left after oil extraction becomes a protein-rich feed for cattle, goats, and poultry. As a result, almost every part of the crop is used. From a nutritional perspective, 100 grams of peanuts provide approximately 560 kcal, nearly 25 grams of protein, and more than 45 grams of fat, most of which are unsaturated. They are also an excellent source of vitamin E, magnesium, and folate.
The Economic and Climate Challenges Facing Farmers
Despite its importance, the peanut sector faces several significant challenges. Climate change is gradually altering rainfall patterns. Excessive rain during flowering reduces pod formation, while prolonged drought can severely lower yields. Fungal diseases also pose a serious threat. Some cause pod rot or encourage the development of aflatoxins, toxic substances produced by certain fungi.
Meanwhile, Indonesian farmers must compete with imported peanuts. Every year, Indonesia imports several hundred thousand tonnes of peanuts, mainly from India, China, Vietnam, and Argentina. These imports put downward pressure on prices received by local producers. Yields also remain relatively modest. On average, one hectare produces between 1.3 and 2 tonnes of shelled peanuts, depending on farming practices and weather conditions. At the same time, labor costs continue to rise. This combination of factors reduces the profitability of small family farms.

A Modest Crop with Major Importance
Peanuts may not receive as much attention as rice, but their economic importance remains considerable. Hundreds of thousands of farming families depend on peanut cultivation to supplement their income. In some parts of Java, it is one of the few crops that can be profitably grown during the dry season. Researchers are now developing new peanut varieties that are more resistant to drought, diseases, and rising temperatures. Their goal is to maintain production despite increasingly unstable climatic conditions. At the same time, several programs promote better post-harvest storage to reduce losses caused by mold.
The development of higher-value processed peanut products could also improve farmers’ incomes. Ultimately, behind every handful of peanuts lies a delicate balance between agriculture, food security, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods. In Java, this small crop continues to feed communities while preserving agricultural knowledge passed down through generations.
