BALI FROM THE SKY – A Cinematic Journey Above the Island

For more than fifteen years, photographer and filmmaker Damien Lafon has explored Bali and its relationship between people and nature. Through photography and documentary filmmaking, he has captured landscapes, traditions and everyday life across the Indonesian island.

Bali From the Sky offers a different perspective, revealing the island through aerial cinematography. From volcanic mountains to tropical forests, each landscape tells a story shaped by nature and human activity.

Moreover, the documentary reveals patterns and geographical connections that often remain invisible from the ground. Rice terraces follow the contours of hillsides, while traditional villages and sacred temples emerge within the surrounding landscape.

Together, these images present Bali as a living environment shaped by geography, culture and generations of human activity.

Across Bali, natural landscapes and cultural traditions remain closely connected. Agricultural terraces reflect centuries of farming knowledge, while temples occupy important places within the island’s cultural landscape.

Meanwhile, volcanic formations, tropical valleys and remote coastlines reveal the diversity of Bali’s natural environment.

Filmed across the island over several months, Bali From the Sky explores these landscapes from a distinctive aerial perspective.

Furthermore, the documentary highlights the relationship between local communities and the environments that support their daily lives.

From remote agricultural areas to coastal settlements, each sequence offers another perspective on the island’s identity.

As Bali continues to evolve, these images also document landscapes influenced by tourism, development and environmental change.

Through carefully composed aerial sequences, natural light and cinematic storytelling, Bali From the Sky presents an atmospheric portrait of the island.

Rather than following a conventional travel narrative, the film invites viewers to observe familiar places from an unexpected perspective.

Consequently, mountains, coastlines, temples and rice terraces become part of a larger visual story about Bali’s cultural and natural heritage.

Ultimately, this short documentary offers an opportunity to rediscover the island through observation, curiosity and visual exploration.

Bali From the Sky celebrates the connections between people, traditions and landscapes, revealing an island beyond its familiar destinations.
