MAKEPUNG BALI – The Tradition of Buffalo Racing

In western Bali, the district of Jembrana preserves a distinctive cultural tradition known as Makepung. Born in the rice fields, these traditional buffalo races have become an important part of local cultural identity.

Originally connected to agricultural life, Makepung gradually developed into an organised competition between local communities. Today, the races attract participants and spectators who gather to celebrate a tradition deeply rooted in Jembrana’s history.

Makepung Bali is a short documentary exploring this cultural practice through the people, animals and landscapes surrounding it. From preparations in rural villages to the excitement of racing day, the film follows a tradition shaped by generations.

During the racing season, pairs of buffaloes pull traditional wooden carts along designated tracks. Each cart carries a jockey who guides the animals through the competition.

Meanwhile, two historic teams represent different parts of Jembrana. Blok Barat represents the western region, while Blok Timur brings together competitors from the eastern side.

Beyond the races, Makepung reflects relationships between agriculture, family traditions and community pride. For many participants, preparing buffaloes requires time, knowledge and considerable dedication.

However, traditional animal competitions also raise questions about animal welfare and changing public attitudes. Consequently, the documentary considers these issues alongside the cultural importance of Makepung.

Rather than presenting a single perspective, the film observes the tradition within its wider social and historical context.

Through observational cinematography, field photography and natural sound, Makepung Bali captures the atmosphere surrounding this traditional competition.

The documentary follows preparations, encounters between participants and the races themselves. Moreover, it explores the relationship between rural communities and the animals involved in this cultural practice.

As Bali continues to change, traditions such as Makepung remain part of discussions about identity and cultural transmission.

Ultimately, this short documentary offers an introduction to a lesser-known aspect of Balinese heritage. It invites viewers to discover the people and practices behind Jembrana’s buffalo racing tradition.
